[Real] La Liga 2018/2019

One thing not known to most people is that possession and completed passes is the same stat. To count how much possession a team has they count the passes, they do not clock the time they have the ball.

Compare the stats yourself.

967 completed passes in total. Madrid made 254 of them, which is 26% of all passes made, the same as their possession.
Another slightly misleading one is 'touches'. A 'touch' is from the moment that the player receives the ball to the moment that the player gives it away. So playing a one two with a team mate = one touch, same as dribbling the entire length of the pitch and crossing it into the box = one touch. That's why when you see stats about how a striker got pocketed because of their touch count you should be wary. A player having 15 touches during a game doesn't mean they literally touched the ball once every 6 minutes, it just means that's how often they got on the ball - many of those single 'touches' could easily be a 2 man dribble into the box + a shot.
