Susipažinimui su Šventuoju Maximin:
Another former team-mate of his said:
“He could sometimes turn up 30 minutes after the start of a training session, with his jacket & bandana on his head, claiming he was sick and that he could not train, that’s Allan … a very endearing guy who really has talent, but who can also be very annoying in the way he spoils his potential.”
As Vieira said in March: “Allan’s problem, is sadly that he thinks that his talent is enough to go to the very highest level. He needs to understand that he needs to work, to make sacrifices. He needs to suffer. And sadly, he is still yet to understand that.”
Vieira did not manage to get through to him, nor did Lucien Favre, nor did Leonardo Jardim. Will Steve Bruce?

Nenubyrės ASSE pinigėlių kažkiek nuo šio transfero? Nebuvo pasilikta sell-on clause?

Gausim kažkiek kapeikų, kadangi treniravosi už ASSE 14-18 metų būdamas. Procentukai nubyrėjo, kai Monaco į Nice pardavė.

Bournemouthas nori 75M už Ake, o Burnley virš 40M už Tarkowski. Normaliai. Čia jie tiek Leicesterio prašo, beje.

Nu čia ne tiek kaina, kiek vidurinis pirštas. Kas yra suprantama, turint omeny, kad parduodantis klubas pats turėtų per 3 dienas susirasti pamainą.

Cahill dviems metams kraustosi į Crystal Palace.

Ahead of a Premier League campaign, the best chance of tactical intrigue is usually provided by a managerial arrival from abroad seeking to introduce foreign concepts. From Arsene Wenger’s focus on speed and Jose Mourinho’s transitions emphasis, to Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 and Pep Guardiola’s possession play, the English top flight has become reliant on overseas coaches for tactical ingenuity.

This campaign might be different, though, because the three promoted sides are strategically intriguing, with intelligent young coaches – two of them English – who use well-defined systems. They have all improved their squads in the transfer market, but key features of last season’s approaches will remain for 2019-20.
Sheffield United: Overlapping centre backs

Last season’s recipient of the League Managers Association’s manager of the year prize was not Guardiola, who took Manchester City to the first-ever domestic treble in English football history. It wasn’t Jurgen Klopp, who won the European Cup, or even the man he defeated in that final, Mauricio Pochettino.

Instead, it went to Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, who followed the previous three Premier League champions – Claudio Ranieri, Conte and Guardiola – to take the prize. It was not merely recognition of the fact he took the Championship’s pre-season 12th-favourites to automatic promotion, but also that his side played in a genuinely revolutionary manner.

“They play a very unique style that I really enjoy watching,” said Lee Johnson, manager of Bristol City. “You’ve got a lot of sexy names and the foreign flair (managing in the Championship) but he’s winning this type of award, which I think is great. And he’s had to do it the hard way effectively – by being a non-League manager and building his way up.”

Even those with the sexy names and the foreign flair found themselves mesmerised by Wilder’s approach.

“I would say the Sheffield United head coach is someone with new ideas and I have seen very few people with these ideas,” said Leeds’ Argentinian head coach Marcelo Bielsa, whose style seemed set to dominate the Championship last season. Instead, it was Wilder who proved inspirational.

“Usually when you observe someone, you don’t observe what you see every day, you observe new things,” Bielsa continued. “The ideas of our next opponent deserve to be studied… I saw things in Sheffield United that I wanted to develop and I couldn’t do it. I don’t know the history of the head coach but he has done very well.”

Wilder’s default formation was a 3-4-1-2, unusual enough in the Championship. But the truly unique aspect of his system was the manner in which the centre backs operated: Left-sided Jack O’Connell and right-sided Chris Basham were instructed to make extremely aggressive, overlapping runs towards the touchlines, into crossing positions. In turn, the wing backs would tuck inside, ready to switch the play, sometimes finding themselves in goal-scoring positions.

Such an unusual role is perfect for two players with an unusually complete skill set. Wilder pushing his centre backs into crossing positions would be useless if they didn’t boast the quality to provide dangerous deliveries into the box.

O’Connell is a solid, no-nonsense defender who also whips in fine crosses – think Giorgio Chiellini. He might just replicate the achievement of his girlfriend, fellow left-sided defender Alex Greenwood, in representing England. Right-sided Basham joined the club in 2014 as a midfielder and is therefore comfortable pushing into more advanced positions.

Wilder’s system originally emerged as a response to sides who sat deep on the edge of their own penalty box, parking the bus and preventing Sheffield United from passing their way through. It was a logical, if simple solution: Push extra players forward.

A classic example came for Billy Sharp’s 83rd-minute opener in a 2-0 victory at Reading last season. United built an attack with three players down the right – right-sided forward David McGoldrick, attacking midfielder Mark Duffy and right-wing back George Baldock.

Image

Reading initially had numbers to cope, getting three players out wide to shut down the Blades’ trio. But Duffy held onto the ball, while both McGoldrick and Baldock made runs inside to create space for Basham on the overlap.

Image

Basham’s driven cross was deflected towards Sharp, lingering at the far post, for a simple tap-in.

Image

Wilder’s approach became so successful that his wide centre backs started to push forward more quickly. Their speedy attacking transitions were often magnificent, with both wing back and centre back down one flank sprinting forward immediately after possession was regained.

A good example was the only goal at West Brom in February, headed in by loanee Kieran Dowell.

United were defending a throw in from their left back position and, after winning possession, central midfielder Oliver Norwood brought the ball forward. Immediately, to his right, wing back Kieron Freeman and right-sided centre back Martin Cranie advanced.

Image

Norwood played in Freeman, who waited for Cranie’s overlap.

Image

Freeman’s pass was slightly overhit but Cranie slid in, hooking the ball back from the byline towards Dowell, whose header looped in.

Image

It’s significant that none of the trio who combined for this goal were regulars in the starting XI – Wilder’s system works, regardless of the individuals.

For a similar approach in an alternative situation, see the Blades’ opener in their 4-2 October win over Wigan. They won a throw-in level with the edge of the opposition box: Basham went across to take it, before leaving the duty to right-wing back Freeman. Initially, Basham positioned himself in a simple supporting position for a backwards throw.

Image

But after some clever movement from McGoldrick to create space, Basham sprinted in behind and received the throw-in from Freeman.

Image

Basham’s low ball from the byline was forced over the line for an own goal.

Image

The obvious concern when using this approach is the possibility of being exposed to opposition counterattacks and Wilder has happily admitted that “we leave ourselves wide open at times” with this commitment to pushing centre backs forward.

Still, their defensive record last season was excellent – the joint-best record in the division alongside a Middlesbrough side playing typically Tony Pulis football. Their 41 goals-against was 16 fewer than champions Norwich allowed, and 20 less than the other promoted side, Aston Villa. Their defensive record owed much to the positioning of Norwood and fellow midfielder John Fleck, who covered intelligently as the defenders overlapped.

Wilder may nevertheless have to temper his approach in the Premier League, where there are more sides capable of launching rapid counterattacks.

You can imagine his side being on the end of a thrashing in the early weeks, but you can also envisage his unique system causing more illustrious opponents serious problems.
Norwich: Dynamic full back play

Hot on the heels of David Wagner and Ralph Hasenhuttl, Norwich manager Daniel Farke is yet another manager who has been likened to Klopp, having made his name in charge of Borussia Dortmund’s second team.

Farke has actually never even met Klopp – although he won’t have to wait long for his first encounter with his compatriot, Norwich will contest the opening game of the Premier League season, away at Anfield on Friday.

He has a slightly different philosophy to Klopp.

Whereas the Liverpool boss has often dismissed the importance of dominating the ball, instead placing emphasis on immediate ball recovery because he believes it’s the ideal moment for manufacturing goal-scoring opportunities, Farke is more ideological in terms of possession.

His pressing, therefore, is often designed to force the opposition into long, hopeful passes downfield, allowing Norwich to build play from deep.

His default system is a 4-2-3-1, featuring one central midfielder dropping back to sometimes temporarily form a three-man defence. He has experimented, however, with a permanent three-man defence in pre-season.

The headline grabber last season was centre forward Teemu Pukki, who hit 29 goals – the most in the Championship since Glenn Murray managed 30 in 2012-13 for Crystal Palace. His place in the team will come under threat from new arrival Josip Drmic, however, and therefore it’s worth concentrating on two players in less glamorous positions who defined Norwich’s play last season and will have similar roles in the coming campaign.

This is another area where comparison with Klopp’s side makes sense. Liverpool’s two most prolific assisters last season were the two full backs, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson, and Norwich also boast two quick, dynamic and technically proficient full backs.

Left-sided Jamal Lewis and right-sided Max Aarons have much in common – both spent time in Luton Town’s academy system before joining Norwich at the age of 16, and both were named in the Championship Team of the Season in May, alongside Pukki.

Lewis, now 21, made his debut midway through 2017-18 and quickly established himself as a regular, while 19-year-old Aarons made his debut last September in the derby against Ipswich. Both are excellent prospects, though Aarons who has overtaken Lewis to be regarded as Norwich’s best young player, and his excellent deliveries from the right have prompted comparisons with Alexander-Arnold.

One particular assist from last season, for a Pukki goal in a 4-0 thrashing of Sheffield Wednesday, concisely illustrates Aarons’ brilliance.

The right back collected the ball deep in his own half, played the ball inside to the right-sided Emi Buendia and then sprinted up the touchline.

Image

After collecting the return pass from Buendia, he then repeated the trick with Mario Vrancic, again continuing his run.

Image

Then, finally, he squared for a Pukki tap-in.

Image

Three separate contributions up the right flank – launching the attack, keeping the pass moving, then providing the final pass. It was perhaps the assist of the Championship campaign and is a concise summary of why he was voted the EFL’s Young Player of the Season.

Lewis doesn’t quite boast the same level of delivery from the left, but it’s notable that he is happier drifting inside into central playmaking positions and providing assists by sliding through-balls between defenders – often with his right foot.

That was the case in a 2-0 early-season win over Preston, for a Pukki finish low into the far corner.

Image

He did the same for Vrancic’s winner against Aston Villa in May, the final goal of Norwich’s title-winning campaign. Initially, he received the ball in the left-back zone and then dribbled forward into an inside-left position.

Image

After travelling 40 yards with the ball, he slipped in Vrancic, who fired home from the edge of the box.

Image

The duo will find themselves tested more sternly in a defence this season – they might find themselves up against joint-top Premier League scorers Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah on their Premier League debuts – but both will be given freedom to attack and could establish themselves as among the top-flight’s best full back pairings.
Aston Villa: Two free eights

Villa are the most familiar of the three clubs returning to the Premier League, although last season’s performances offer the fewest hints to how they’ll play. They relied heavily on loans in the promotion campaign and have recruited heavily this summer, both to replace loanees and to improve the calibre of the squad in general.

It’s also worth remembering that manager Dean Smith only arrived in October, and that while his adjustments unquestionably improved Villa, this wasn’t a fully-formed side like Norwich or Sheffield United were – after all, they came up through the play-offs having finished fifth.

The one area of the Villa side set to remain in place, however, is the relationship between John McGinn and Jack Grealish, their two advanced midfielders.

The fact they can be described collectively in those terms is, in itself, a hallmark of Smith’s tactical alterations. Predecessor Steve Bruce had started the campaign using a 4-2-3-1 with Grealish, the popular homegrown playmaker and captain, deployed in the role that matches his number 10 shirt. McGinn, an astute capture from Hibernian last summer, played deeper.

Smith’s approach was different.

With Glenn Whelan or Conor Hourihane deployed in a disciplined holding role, McGinn and Grealish were given freedom to advance.

Grealish still plays, on average, higher up the pitch than McGinn, but their aggressive positioning can be compared to the way Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola uses Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva – or, perhaps a less fanciful comparison, the manner in which Brendan Rodgers reformatted his Leicester side to use James Maddison and Youri Tielemans alongside one another.

From an early stage in Smith’s reign, it was obvious that their freedom to attack would create chances. Grealish’s goal against Bolton, less than a month after the manager’s arrival, saw centre forward Tammy Abraham come deep and receive possession between the lines, with both Grealish and McGinn breaking in behind. Grealish was played in, rounded the goalkeeper and rolled the ball home.

Image

The partnership has also worked more directly.

In the reverse fixture against Bolton, a 2-0 away win, Villa wrapped up the points after McGinn received the ball in an inside-right position and floated a tremendous pass over the top for the onrushing Grealish, who in turn fed Abraham to bundle the ball home.

Image

The use of right-footed Grealish to the left and the left-footed McGinn to the right has also worked well as they both tend to check inside into central positions, opening up the possibility of either through-balls or shots.

Both could find the net more, although both have contributed spectacular goals – most notably McGinn’s staggering side-on volley against Sheffield Wednesday, and Grealish’s Scholes-esque volley from a corner against Derby.

Villa have made defensive reinforcements, bolstered their wide options and upgraded upfront too. The recent signing of Douglas Luiz should also provide these two with more protection.

It’s Grealish and McGinn, though, who define this Villa side.

Together with the other promoted sides, their strategic intelligence means they are very much capable of Premier League survival – and maybe more.
